Now that it's summer, smoothies have become my go-to breakfast. They're cool, refreshing, delicious, and nutritious. But, I'll be honest. Smoothies don't always fill me up. Anyone else feel like they have to eat something afterwards to get full? This could be due to a few things. We tend to drink things faster than we eat them. It's hard to slow your sipping down when it tastes so good and you're super hungry. Some science also suggests that we feel more full when we chew whole foods, rather than drinking them - if you feel this is the case for you, stray away from smoothies for a little while, eat real foods, and notice if you feel a difference in fullness. But, another reason you don't feel full after your smoothie could relate to what you're putting in it.
My latest smoothie discovery is the Berry Oat Smoothie. I slightly modified this recipe from one that I found on Pinterest. What I love about it, is that not only does it taste delicious, but the oats add an extra 4 grams of fill-you-up fiber and 5 grams of satiating protein.
Sip slowly. If you're still hungry afterwards, drink a glass of water. You can also use a higher-fat milk like 1% or 2% cow's milk. The extra fat will hold you over longer.
1-2 c frozen strawberries (or ~10 strawberries)
1/4 c frozen blueberries
1 small banana
1/2 c uncooked quick oats
1 tbsp honey
1 c soy milk (can add more if smoothie is too thick)
shredded coconut (optional)
Throw all ingredients into your blender and blend until smooth. Top with shredded coconut.
